Our dear friend Yael Velez is a gentle, loving, brilliantly creative soul who has spent his life spreading joy through art, performance, and compassion. Born and raised in Puerto Rico with his mother and brother, Yael’s passion for storytelling led him to study theater at university. His curiosity and a budding performance art practice carried him around the world, working and traveling before settling in Southeast Asia.
Eight years ago, Yael found his heart’s home in Vietnam. There, he built a new life teaching English, engaging in his community, and making as much art as possible. His dream of becoming an art and drama teacher came true when he was hired by a prestigious international school, complete with red curtains and a professional stage.
Yael is a beloved member of Vietnam’s LGBTQ+ community and a driving force in its performance art scene. He has organized and performed in countless shows that raised funds for charity and visibility for queer artists. More recently, he began working with the Goethe Institute, bringing art workshops to children and the community. Additionally, he was developing a highly anticipated and supported art theory workshop series, as well as an artist residency program to support local Vietnamese artists in expanding their creative horizons.
In 2024, Yael suffered a series of mental health crises that led to his hospitalization. Shortly after being discharged, and for reasons that remain unclear, he was arrested and is now being held in prison in Vietnam. In Yael’s own words, “I haven’t seen the moon in almost a year.”
We believe that Yael has been wrongly convicted of the charges brought against him. Unfortunately, navigating the legal system in Vietnam is extremely difficult, especially for foreigners, and information about his case is limited. At this time, we must rely on the lawyers we have hired to advocate for him and work toward his release.
Legal fees are rising quickly, and Yael’s family and friends are doing everything possible to support him from afar. We are asking for your help inraising funds so his family can continue providing ongoing legal support and ensure he receives the best possible representation and care.
Your contribution will go directly toward his legal expenses and helping Yael. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us move one step closer to justice, healing, and Yael’s return to the creative life he loves. Currently, he isn’t even allowed pen and paper.
Yael has spent his life lifting up others through art, compassion, and community. Now it’s our turn to lift him.
Thank you for your support. Please share and help us bring Yael home.
